Historical and Geographical Settings of the Bible

A three-week study experience focusing on the history and geography of the land of the Bible. Explore nearly the entire land of Israel, including an optional excursion to Jordan.

Three Weeks. 150 Miles.
One Changed Perspective.

What You Will Learn

This intensive three-week course will introduce you to the geography, history, and archaeology of Israel. You will begin to feel at home on the playing field of biblical history after traveling through the land of the Bible. We visit biblical sites in nearly every corner of Israel and engage the biblical text in the field using custom maps, reference material, and lectures.

What You Will Do

You will walk the streets of Jerusalem to understand aspects of the biblical and modern city. Explore archaeological ruins from the time of Hezekiah. Visit Jesus’ backyard to understand his life and ministry. Hike through the canyon of a desert oasis. Learn how the biblical writers were influenced by the land of the Bible. Follow in the Footsteps of Jesus

What You Will Learn

This special two-week course emphasizes the geographical, historical, and cultural setting of Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and Galilee during the time of Jesus. Students will study the historical context of the Second Temple Period and learn how historical figures and world powers shaped the political, religious, and social environment of the world of Jesus and early Judaism.

What You Will Do

The field studies follow the basic chronology of the life of Christ, spending one week in the Galilee region and one week in the Jerusalem region. Sit on steps where early rabbis taught to better understand the context of Jesus’ teaching. Watch the sunset on the Sea of Galilee. Feel the personality of Herod through his massive building projects. All this and more will make Jesus and his ministry come to life in new ways.

Students and participants in this program will use maps created by Biblical Backgrounds.

When It Is Offered

This course is offered every summer during the first two weeks of July.

Those interested in a five-week period of study may combine the three-week Historical and Geographical Settings of the Bible program offered each June with the Jesus and His Times program offered in July.

Semester Study Abroad

A Unique Program in Israel

When was the last time you walked through the City of David, took a boat across the Sea of Galilee, hiked the land of the Edomites, or climbed to the top of an extinct volcano to catch a view into Syria? Our study abroad students do all this and more.

We offer courses in the history, geography, culture, religions, and languages of biblical times and of the modern Middle East. Our rich academic program brings JUC students to nearly every corner of Israel and Jordan to engage with the Bible in its land. Students have the opportunity to study with Israeli and Palestinian faculty members who are experts in their fields.

JUC accepts students from both consortium institutions and non-member schools. Undergraduate and graduate students who are either currently enrolled at other institutions or who have completed one year of college may study for a semester at JUC and transfer applicable credits to their home institutions.

Students in this program will use the maps and resources created by Biblical Backgrounds.
