UNIT DESCRIPTION
This unit offers students the opportunity to explore an area of study that fits, broadly, within the domain of their discipline, but which may not be covered in the other units on offer. No entitlement exists to enrol in this unit, and approval to do so must be granted by Chancellor Institute, who will also appoint a supervisor. This unit is demanding because it requires a high level of self-motivation and self-directed learning.
The student will enter into a learning contract with the supervisor which will include the following: 1) Project proposal and learning outcomes, 2) annotated bibliography, 3) the research problem(s) or question(s) to be addressed, 4) the due dates of all assessed work, and 5) details of how the supervision relationship will be managed (e.g. schedule of meetings).
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
- Develop a demanding but achievable project proposal in a field related to the student’s field of study, in consultation with a supervisor.
- Complete an approved independent project with a high level of autonomy.
- Critically evaluate relevant existing research.
- Apply in-depth discipline learning and understanding to a research project.
