Photojournalism

UNIT DESCRIPTION

This unit covers the technical aspects of digital photography as well as the profession of the photojournalist and how to create photos for online or print publications. Students learn about camera operations including aperture, shutterspeed, ISO, optics, lenses, lighting, composition, and framing. They are also introduced to photo and image editing applications and postproduction processes. After learning about the technical aspects of photography, students study the role of photojournalism in society and how to create meaning through images. Students analyse the works of critically acclaimed photojournalists and produce a portfolio and reflections of their own photography.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
  1. Analyse photojournalism and documentary practices
  2. Employ the qualities of storytelling using images
  3. Use technologies in digital photography
  4. Apply journalistic ethics to photojournalism

CERTIFICATION

The optional assessment tasks associated with this unit provide an opportunity for participants to consolidate their learning and to benchmark their understanding against the standard set by Chancellor Institute. Participants enrolled in this unit who successfully complete the optional assessments will qualify for a grade, academic transcript and certificate of completion for that unit.
